Well everybody, I saw Toy Story 3 last night. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Usually, when Disney makes a sequel, it’s almost guaranteed not to be as good as the original. I remember seeing Toy Story 2 (granted, I haven’t seen it since it came out), and not liking it so much. But this is Pixar. They are genius story tellers, and deserve nothing but the utmost respect. So I went in with an open mind.
Now the first thing to note here is that the movie is in 3D. Bear in mind this isn’t like your “Sharkboy and Lava Girl” 3D, this is like Avatar 3D. Here’s a little background on 3D, for those of you who don’t know. Stereoscopy is any technique that is able to produce an illusion of depth. The old crappy way of doing that was called Anaglyph images. That’s where you take a normal image, and split it into opposing colors (see above). When you put on the special “red/blue” glasses, the image would look like it’s in 3D. The new way of doing it is cooler, but also a lot more expensive.
This new way requires a special camera, one with 2 lenses. Because there are two different perspectives, when you overlay the two images (either back and forth really fast, or with two projectors), it creates the illusion of 3D. You can see how it works by holding a finger up to your nose. Look with only your left eye, and then only your right. you see that there are two different perspectives. But when you look with both eyes, you perceive 3D. Isn’t that cool. Now, I said it was expensive to do. Just look at James Cameron’s “Avatar”. Because of that, most films are cutting corners with their 3D, and creating stereoscopic images in post production (after the movie has already been shot). But since the world of Toy Story exists in a computer, Pixar doesn’t have to worry about that.
A last note about 3D before I get on to the juicy stuff. I like 3D. Yeah, it may seem like a stupid fad, but I really think that when you do it correctly, it’s worth it. It’s no longer the gimmicky “oh-look-something-is-coming-out-of-the-screen-to-get-you”. I mean, if you think about it, this is the next technological leap. Where else do you go from HD, aside from higher quality HD?
So. Here it is. The real reason you wanted to read this. Toy Story 3. It started out, as all Pixar movies do, with a small animated short. Aside from being (in my opinion) the best of Pixar’s shorts so far, it was an excellent example of how 3D should be used. It was a classic story about fear of the unknown, with a happy feel good ending. I won’t say anymore than that, because I feel I’m able to describe it properly. If you’ve seen it, you’d understand.
And then the movie started. I should say that this movie held some significance for me, because the whole movie is about how Andy (like myself) is going to college. The story centers around the toy’s feelings about being thrown away as Andy moves on. It’s a story the likes of which only Pixar can truly tell. After seeing this movie, I can safely say, that this is no ordinary sequel. It in no way sours the original. This movie could easily stand on it’s own. If you have enjoyed Wally and Up, which of course you did, then you’ll love this movie. I won’t say any more, except to tell you to go watch it. I’m sorry if you feel like I tricked you into reading all of this, expecting to read an actual review. But there is just no way I could give an accurate review without leaving something out. This movie is perfect for anyone and everyone, I don’t care who you are (except for babies. they cry during movies. don’t bring you baby to a movie if he’s gonna cry. i mean really. control your kid. at least take him outside if he starts crying for god’s sake).
I’m going to be a music dork now and give this movie my highest rating of a Perfect 5th
My scale from worst to best being: Tritone, minor 2nd, major 2nd, minor 3rd, major 3rd, and perfect 4th, and perfect 5th.
